YouTube Shorts on the iPhone Duo: How to Stop the Big-Screen Rabbit Hole

The iPhone Duo's inner display measures 7.6 inches, which Apple says is 50% larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max's. YouTube Shorts are vertical clips that autoplay one after another, and the people searching "iphone duo youtube" are mostly asking the same thing: will this be better, or just more of the same on a bigger canvas?
The part we can speak to is what you can control, on any iPhone.
In short: YouTube has no setting that removes Shorts. You can hide the Shorts shelf temporarily, pause watch history and use "Take a break" reminders, or use iOS Screen Time to cap the whole app. Stillfeed, a free iPhone in-app browser, removes Shorts from youtube.com.
The iPhone Duo facts that matter
According to Apple, the Duo went on sale on October 23, 2026 with a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer display, and an A20 Pro chip. Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, and 44 hours on the outer. It is built for watching things. That is good news for a film and bad news for an infinite feed.
Apple's announcement names Netflix, Zoom and Slack as launch app support and doesn't mention YouTube, so how YouTube behaves on the inner display is for YouTube to say.
Does a bigger screen make Shorts worse?
Shorts work because each clip is over in seconds and the next one starts on its own. Screen size doesn't change that loop. What a larger display can change is how absorbing it feels. If you already lose an evening to them, see how to stop doomscrolling and why short video is so hard to quit, which covers the same mechanism on Reels.
What YouTube lets you change
- Hide the Shorts shelf. On the home feed, open the menu on the Shorts shelf and say you're not interested. It comes back after a while, and the Shorts tab stays.
- Pause watch history. With it paused, the home page recommends far less, which makes it less sticky. It does not remove Shorts.
- Take a break reminders. A nudge after a set time. You can dismiss it.
- Turn off autoplay on regular videos so one video doesn't roll into the next.
The longer rundown is in can you turn off Reels and Shorts on iPhone?
iOS Screen Time
- Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit.
- Select YouTube and pick a daily time.
- Switch on Block at End of Limit.
It caps the whole app and can't tell Shorts from a lecture you need for work, so the limit takes both.
Removing Shorts with Stillfeed
Stillfeed is an in-app browser for iPhone. It loads the real youtube.com, signed into your account, and removes the Shorts tab and shelf before they appear. That is free from the first launch, with no trial and no Stillfeed account. Stillfeed Pro is optional and adds extras such as a daily time limit.
It never changes your subscriptions or history, and it doesn't record what you watch. Details are in the privacy policy. It's an iPhone app, so it runs on iPhone Duo like any other.
Download Stillfeed, pick YouTube, log in, and move the official YouTube app off your home screen so your thumb doesn't go there by habit. More YouTube specifics: turning off YouTube Shorts.
Split View and the second display
Apple's newsroom post describes two things that matter for video: Split View, which puts two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, and an outer 5.4-inch display you can use while the phone is closed. Neither one changes how Shorts work. They change where you might end up watching them.
A sensible rule: use the inner display for videos you chose and the outer display for quick checks. Apple's page says the outer display lasts longer on video playback (up to 44 hours against 31 on the inner display, under Apple's test conditions), which is one reason to keep short, unplanned viewing there. Nothing in Apple's announcement says how YouTube uses either display.
If you do run YouTube beside another app, make the other app a finite one, like notes or messages. Two feeds side by side is just a bigger distraction.
A five-minute setup
- Open the menu on the Shorts shelf to say you're not interested. It is temporary but it helps for a few days.
- Pause watch history in YouTube's settings if you want a quieter home page.
- Set a Take a break reminder in YouTube's settings.
- Add a Screen Time limit: Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → YouTube.
- Install Stillfeed if you want Shorts gone for good, sign in to YouTube inside it, and remove the official app from your home screen.
Steps 1 to 4 use nothing but built-in options. Step 5 is the only one that changes what is shown. Remember the limits of each: shelves return, reminders get dismissed and Screen Time is all-or-nothing for the app.
Common questions
Can you turn off YouTube Shorts on iPhone Duo?
Not in YouTube's settings on any iPhone. Hiding the shelf is temporary. Stillfeed removes Shorts from the YouTube you open inside it.
Does Stillfeed work on iPhone Duo?
Yes. It's an iPhone app, so it runs on iPhone Duo like any other iPhone app.
Is the Shorts removal free?
Yes. Stillfeed Pro is a separate optional purchase.
Will it hide Shorts in the YouTube app?
No. Stillfeed only changes YouTube inside Stillfeed, so move the official app out of reach.
How do I stop Shorts from autoplaying on the inner display?
There is no Shorts-specific off switch in YouTube. Removing the Shorts tab and shelf with Stillfeed means there is nothing to autoplay.
Is the outer display better for quick checks?
That is a choice, not a rule. Apple lists longer video playback on the outer display, 44 hours against 31, but how you use it is up to you.
Does Stillfeed hide anything on regular videos?
Its free YouTube feature is removing Shorts. Regular videos, your subscriptions and your playlists are left as they are.
