iPhone Duo and Instagram: A Calmer Setup for a Foldable Phone

A new phone is the best moment to set up your apps properly, because none of your habits have attached themselves to it yet. If you picked up an iPhone Duo (on sale since October 23, 2026), this is a good time to decide what Instagram gets to be on it. This is a short setup guide, ordered by effort.
In short: do four things on day one: open Instagram on the Following feed, turn off the notifications that pull you back, set an iOS Screen Time limit, and, if you want Reels and Explore gone rather than avoided, browse Instagram through the free Stillfeed app. None of this depends on the foldable hardware; it works on any iPhone.
Why day one matters
When you restore or move to a new iPhone, your apps come with every default you ever left on. Apple's iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer one, per Apple's product page. How Instagram's own app uses those displays is up to Instagram, and we haven't seen Apple or Instagram describe it, so this guide sticks to settings that don't depend on it.
Step 1: Start on Following
Tap the Instagram logo at the top of the home feed and choose Following. You get posts from accounts you chose, newest first, instead of an algorithmic mix. The limit: Instagram returns you to its recommended feed when you reopen the app. Treat it as a ritual rather than a lock.
Step 2: Quiet the notifications
- Open Settings → Notifications → Instagram.
- Turn off banners and badges, or leave on only the categories you'd miss.
- Inside Instagram's own notification settings, switch off the ones that exist to bring you back, such as suggested posts and recommendations, while keeping direct messages if you need them.
Fewer pings means fewer unplanned opens. For the logic, see our phone addiction guide.
Step 3: Set a Screen Time limit
- Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit.
- Choose Instagram and set a daily time, for example 20 minutes.
- Turn on Block at End of Limit.
Honest caveat: iOS limits whole apps. When the time is up, your messages go too, and "Ignore Limit" is one tap away unless someone else holds the passcode.
Step 4: Remove Reels and Explore
Steps 1 to 3 reduce how much you use Instagram. They don't remove Reels. For that, Stillfeed is an in-app browser for iPhone that loads the real instagram.com and hides Reels, Explore and Suggested posts, free, with Instagram opening to your Following feed. Stillfeed Pro adds hiding Stories and the Feed, a DMs-only mode and a daily limit.
Stillfeed is an iPhone app and runs on iPhone Duo as one. Get Stillfeed on the App Store, log in to Instagram inside it, and take the official Instagram app off your home screen.

A layout idea for two displays
Apple says iOS 27 on iPhone Duo gives you two Home Screen pages when it's open. One idea: keep tools and reading on the first page, and put social somewhere you have to swipe to, or in a folder on the second page. Friction is a feature. Put Stillfeed there instead of the official app.
Split View and saved app pairs
Apple's newsroom post says iOS 27 on iPhone Duo supports two apps side by side, which it calls a first for iPhone, plus multiple windows of the same app, quick app switching and saved app pairs. That is a real change in how a phone can be used, and it deserves a rule of its own.
- Pair Instagram with something finite. A messaging thread, a notes app or a calendar has an end. Another feed does not. If you save an app pair, save one you would be content to leave open all day.
- Avoid a pair that makes Instagram the default companion. A saved pair is a shortcut, and shortcuts are how habits form. If Instagram is in a pair with your work app, you will see it every time you open the pair.
- Check what the second window is doing. Two windows doubles the number of things that can ping you. Revisit Step 2 after you've tried a few layouts.
We haven't seen Apple or Instagram describe how Instagram handles these features, so test it yourself rather than assuming anything from this guide.
The first week check-in
Settings only work if you look at the result. After seven days, open Settings → Screen Time and look at Instagram's daily average. Then ask three questions:
- Did the number go down, stay flat or go up?
- Which time of day did most of it happen? If it's late evening, an iOS Downtime window may help more than an app limit.
- When you hit the limit, did you tap Ignore Limit? If you did more than once, ask a friend to set the Screen Time passcode.
Adjust one thing at a time. If you change everything at once you won't know what worked. Our guide to a dopamine detox has a gentler way to reset the habit if the numbers stay high.
If you only need messages
Plenty of people keep Instagram for one reason: their friends are there and they talk in DMs. In that case the best setup is the one that gets you to the inbox and nowhere else. With Stillfeed Pro there is a DMs-only mode that does this; the free version already hides Reels, Explore and Suggested and opens on Following. Either way, the aim is the same: talk to people, then close the app.
Common questions
What's the best Instagram setup for iPhone Duo?
The same as for any iPhone: Following feed, fewer notifications, a Screen Time limit and, if you want Reels gone, Stillfeed.
Can I make Instagram open on Following every time?
Not in Instagram itself. Stillfeed opens Instagram to the Following feed by default.
Does Stillfeed read my Instagram account?
No. It shows Instagram's own website and hides parts of the page on your phone. It doesn't change your account or record what you see or type. Details are in the privacy policy.
Does Stillfeed work on iPhone Duo?
Yes. It's an iPhone app, so it runs on iPhone Duo like any other iPhone app.
Should I save Instagram in an app pair on iPhone Duo?
Probably not with another feed. Apple says iOS 27 supports saved app pairs on the Duo, but a pair makes Instagram easier to open, which works against what this guide is for.
How long should the Screen Time limit be?
That is personal. Many people start at 20 to 30 minutes and look at the weekly average after a week before changing it.
Do I need to do all four steps?
No. Step 1 is free and takes ten seconds. Do the others as you need them.
