Instagram on the iPhone Duo: What the App Looks Like on the Inner Display

Before the iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23, 2026, one question kept coming up: would Instagram look right on the 7.6-inch inner display, or would it float in the middle of the screen with black space around it? This guide answers that from what Apple has published, plus what owners and trackers reported in the first week. It also covers how the web version compares and what to do if the bigger feed makes the scroll worse.
In short: Apple's October 22 developer announcement names Instagram as an app that shows "more posts and Stories onscreen at once" on iPhone Duo. Apps that have not been updated appear in a centered window with empty space around it. The Instagram app is not a separate "Duo version" you have to find; it is the normal one, updated. If the bigger canvas just means a longer Reels loop, Stillfeed opens Instagram on your Following feed with Reels and Explore removed, for free.
Which phone this is about
Searches for "iphone 18 duo instagram" are about Apple's iPhone Duo. The name is iPhone Duo, not iPhone 18 Duo. Apple compares the inner display with the iPhone 18 Pro Max in its announcement, saying it is 50 percent larger. Apple lists a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and both are Super Retina XDR.
What Apple says about Instagram
On October 22 Apple published a roundup of apps built for the Duo. Two lines mention Instagram. One says "Instagram shows more posts and Stories onscreen at once", and the other says that with Instagram Edits on iPhone Duo, creators can view their full creative studio. Apple also says apps optimized for the Duo carry a Made for iPhone Duo badge on their product pages.
In practice that tells you what the update is about: more of the same content in view. It does not describe a separate layout mode or a new feed. The feed, the Reels tab and the Explore grid are the ones you already know, shown on a larger canvas.
What an unoptimized app looks like
The "iphone duo apps not optimized" searches have a precise answer in Apple's developer guidance. Apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier run on iPhone Duo but will not adapt to all layouts. When the device is open, the app appears in the center of the display with empty space surrounding the window, and when it is closed, the outer display shows the app's content next to the status bar and camera. Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK resize to fill most of the inner display, and apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later extend to the full display.
So the three states you may see are a small centered window, a nearly full-width app, and an app that uses the whole inner display. Which one Instagram gives you depends on the version installed. Updating from the App Store is the only fix, and the Made for iPhone Duo badge on the product page is Apple's marker for apps that have done the work.
What owners and trackers reported
- Owners, first weekend. An r/iphone thread from October 24, about returning a Duo, includes owners saying their main complaint was apps not being optimized. The comments name YouTube; they do not single out Instagram.
- A tracker. The third-party site fitsduo.com lists Instagram as "Fits", meaning it fills the inner screen and adapts when you fold, since version 453.0, updated October 26. It is an unofficial list, so the App Store page and your own screen settle it.
- Reviewers. A Gadget Review article on Yahoo Tech summarizing Wired's review says Instagram, Threads, Slack and Google's app were adding improved layouts during the review period. It cites CNN naming Google Maps, Gmail, Call of Duty Mobile and Uber as apps not fully adapted. Instagram is not on that list.
- How it feels. One commenter in an r/apple thread said the big screen makes social media and video more like using an iPad. It is one person's opinion.
Instagram on the web compared
The SDK rules above describe native apps, apps built with Apple's tools and installed from the App Store. They describe the Instagram app, not instagram.com. The website is a page rendered by a browser engine, and it chooses its layout from the space it is given. The practical difference is where updates come from: the app changes when Meta ships a new build, while the site changes when Instagram changes the site.
The content differs too. The Instagram website and the app share the same account, feed, messages and Stories. The website is where a tool like Stillfeed works, since it can remove Reels and Explore from a page without waiting for the app to offer a switch.
A bigger feed is still a feed
Apple's own wording for the update is that Instagram shows more posts and Stories at once. That is a fair description of what a larger screen does for any feed: more of it on every swipe. If you already lose time in Instagram, more content per screen does not shorten the scroll. For the habit side, see the day-one setup guide for Instagram on iPhone Duo, which covers Following, notifications and Screen Time limits, and how to keep Reels from taking over the big screen. This guide is about what the app looks like. Those two are about what to do with it.
Instagram without Reels in Stillfeed
Instagram has no setting that turns off Reels. Its Following feed, which shows only the accounts you follow, newest first, resets to the recommended feed each time you open the app.
Stillfeed is an in-app browser for iPhone that loads the real instagram.com, signed into your own account. As of October 2026, on Instagram it:
- opens on your Following feed, in chronological order;
- removes the Reels tab and blocks Reels pages;
- blocks the Explore feed, while search keeps working.
Your messages, Stories, profiles and posts from people you follow stay. That is free from the first launch, with no trial and no Stillfeed account, and Stillfeed Pro is optional. The page on turning off Reels on Instagram has the full list. Download Stillfeed, pick Instagram, sign in, and move the official app off your home screen.
Common questions
Is Instagram optimized for the iPhone Duo?
Apple's October 22 announcement lists it, saying Instagram shows more posts and Stories onscreen at once. A third-party tracker lists it as fitting the inner display since version 453.0.
Does Instagram have black bars on the iPhone Duo?
An app that has not been updated appears in a centered window with empty space around it, per Apple's developer guidance. An updated app fills the display. Check that Instagram is up to date.
How do I know if an app is made for the iPhone Duo?
Apple says optimized apps carry a Made for iPhone Duo badge on their App Store product pages.
Why are some iPhone Duo apps not optimized?
Apple's guidance ties it to the SDK an app was built with. Apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier run but do not adapt to all layouts, and developers have to rebuild with a newer SDK.
Is Instagram on the web different from the app?
Apple's SDK rules apply to native apps. The website is a page in a browser, and it shares your account, feed and messages with the app.
Can I use Instagram without Reels on the iPhone Duo?
Not by a setting in Instagram. Stillfeed removes the Reels tab and blocks Reels and Explore, and opens on Following.
